Sheet Metal Feature Recognition Library

Sheet metal feature recognition library extends the powerful functionality of Solid model feature recognition to sheet metal objects.

Sheet metal feature recognition library operates on boundary representation (B-Rep) solid models and surface models to recognize sheet metal features. Features recognized by the library can be used to recreate specifications on an imported sheet metal part. Much time can be saved since the user need not have to re-design the part in order to perform modifications.

Sheet metal feature recognition library is built upon the basic FR library. It interacts with the CAD system through the basic FR library.

Functional Overview:

  • Automatic Feature Recognition:
    • The algorithm needs thickness of the sheet metal part and a reference face to initiate the recognition. The algorithm runs one shot and does its best to recognize all the sheet metal features present in the part. For more information about the input and output data, see "automatic recognition"
  • Interactive Recognition:
    • There is a provision to supply additional information in the form of clue feature faces. Selective recognition of features is possible by disabling the "full recognition" flag. Only the features comprising of the selected clue faces will be recognized if the "full recognition" flag is off. For more information about the recognition flags, see "recognition options"
  • Feature Types:
Sheet metal feature recognition library recognizes features and provides information related to the following sheet metal features:
    • Wall
    • Extrusion Wall
    • Bend
    • Flange
    • Stamp
    • Other Feature
      • Hole
      • Cutout
  • Interactive Thickness Computation:
    • Sheet metal library also provides functionality to compute the thickness of the sheet metal part. The thickness computation API takes a reference face as input. This reference face is used for computation of thickness

Applications of Sheet Metal Feature Recognition:

  • Unbending and blank generation
  • Bending sequence generation
  • Design of progressive dies
  • Designing fixtures for operating on sheet metal parts
  • Cost estimation

Sheet Metal Feature Recognition can benefit OEMs and end users involved in:

  • Sheet metal CAD
  • Progressive tool design
  • Sheet metal cost estimation
  • Designing fixtures for operating on sheet metal parts
  • Inspection software
